SASSA Payment Not Received - What to Do

Last updated:

If your SASSA grant status shows "Approved" but the money has not arrived in your account, do not panic. There are several common reasons why this happens, and most can be resolved. This guide walks you through each possible cause and what to do about it.

Step 1: Check if Your Payment Date Has Passed

SASSA releases grant payments on specific dates each month. Different grant types are paid on different dates. Before assuming there is a problem, make sure the payment date for your specific grant has actually passed.

Check the 2026 SASSA payment schedule:

View Payment Dates

Important: Even after SASSA releases the payment, it can take 1 to 3 business days for the money to reach your bank account. Weekends and public holidays do not count as business days. If the payment date was a Friday, you might not see the money until Monday or Tuesday.

Step 2: Check Your Banking Details

Incorrect or outdated banking details are the most common reason for failed SASSA payments. Your payment will fail if:

  • The bank account number on your SASSA record is wrong
  • The bank account has been closed
  • The account is not in your name (SASSA requires the bank account to be registered in the grant recipient's name)
  • The account type has changed (for example, from savings to current)
  • Someone has fraudulently changed your banking details

Check and update your banking details here:

You will need your South African ID number to access this page.

Fraud Warning

If you find that your banking details have been changed without your knowledge, your grant may have been stolen through fraud. Report this immediately to the SASSA fraud hotline at 0800 701 701 and open a case at your nearest SAPS station.

Step 3: Check Your Payment Method

How your grant is paid depends on the payment method you selected. Different methods have different timelines and potential issues:

Bank Account Payment

If your grant is paid into a bank account, the money is transferred electronically. It should arrive within 1 to 3 business days after the SASSA payment date. If it has been more than 3 business days and the money has not arrived, check your banking details as described in Step 2.

Post Office Collection

If you collect your grant at the Post Office, the money should be available from the payment date. You need to bring your original South African ID document. Note that:

  • Not all Post Office branches process SASSA payments - check that yours does
  • Post Office branches can run out of cash on busy payment days - if this happens, try again the next day or at a different branch
  • You usually have up to 5 working days to collect after the payment date

Cash Send / eWallet

Some SRD grant payments are sent via Cash Send or eWallet to your registered phone number. You will receive an SMS with instructions on how to withdraw the money at an ATM. If you did not receive the SMS, your phone number on the SASSA system may be wrong, or the SMS may have been delayed. Check your phone number at srd.sassa.gov.za.

Step 4: Other Common Causes

Banking Verification Pending

When you submit or change banking details, SASSA needs to verify them with your bank. This verification can take up to one payment cycle. During this time, your status may show "approved" but the payment is held until verification is complete.

Payment Method Expired or Invalid

If you were using a temporary payment method (such as a specific eWallet or Cash Send arrangement) that has expired, your payment may fail. Update your payment method at srd.sassa.gov.za/said.

SASSA System Delays

Occasionally, SASSA experiences technical issues that delay payments for some recipients. When this happens, SASSA usually makes an announcement. These delays are typically resolved within a few days.

Review or Re-Assessment

SASSA periodically reviews grant recipients to confirm ongoing eligibility. If your application is under review, payments may be paused until the review is complete. Check your full status at srd.sassa.gov.za for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SASSA status says approved but I haven't received any money. What should I do?
First, check if your payment date has actually passed by visiting our payment dates page. SASSA releases payments on specific dates each month, and bank processing can take 1 to 3 additional business days. If the date has passed and you still have not received payment, check your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za/said to make sure they are correct. If everything looks right, call SASSA at 0800 60 10 11 for assistance.
How long does it take for a SASSA payment to reflect in my bank account?
After SASSA releases a payment, it typically takes 1 to 3 business days for the money to appear in your bank account. The exact time depends on your bank. Major banks like FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, and Nedbank usually process within 1 to 2 business days. Smaller banks and digital banks may take up to 3 business days. Weekends and public holidays are not counted as business days.
What happens if my SASSA banking details are wrong?
If the banking details on your SASSA record are incorrect, your payment will fail and the money will be returned to SASSA. You will need to update your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za/said using your ID number. Make sure the bank account is in your own name - SASSA cannot pay into someone else's account. After updating, the payment will be retried in the next payment cycle.
Can I collect my SASSA grant at the Post Office?
Yes, if your payment method is set to Post Office (SA Post Office or SAPO), you can collect your grant at a participating Post Office branch. You will need your original South African ID document to collect. Post Office payments are usually available from the payment date published by SASSA. Be aware that Post Office branches can be very busy on payment days - arrive early if possible.
My SASSA payment used to arrive but stopped suddenly. Why?
There are several reasons why a previously regular payment might stop: your banking details may have been changed (possibly by a scammer), your bank account may have been closed or flagged, SASSA may have conducted a review and found a change in your eligibility, or there may be a technical issue in the SASSA payment system. Check your status and banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za, and if you suspect fraud, report it to 0800 701 701 immediately.
I changed my bank account. How long until my SASSA payment goes to the new account?
After updating your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za/said, the change typically takes effect from the next payment cycle. If you update close to a payment date, the current month's payment may still go to the old account. Allow one full payment cycle for the change to take effect. Always verify the update was saved by checking your details again after submitting.
What does it mean when my SASSA payment says 'payment file created'?
When your status shows 'payment file created', it means SASSA has processed your payment and sent the instruction to the bank or Post Office. The money has not yet reached your account but it is in the pipeline. After this status appears, you should receive the payment within 1 to 3 business days, depending on your bank or payment method.
I was approved for the SRD R370 grant but never received any payment. What went wrong?
If you were approved but never received a first payment, the most common cause is a banking details issue. Your bank account may not be verified, the details may have been entered incorrectly, or the account may not be in your name. Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/said to check and update your banking details. You can also call 0800 60 10 11 for help. Another possibility is that your approval was overturned after a subsequent review.
