Lost Your SASSA Reference Number? Here's How to Find It
Your SASSA reference number is a unique identifier assigned to your grant application. You need it to check your application status, make enquiries, and follow up on your grant. If you have lost or forgotten your reference number, do not worry - there are several ways to recover it. This guide explains all the methods available to find your SASSA reference number.
What Is a SASSA Reference Number?
When you apply for any SASSA grant, the system generates a unique reference number for your application. This number is used internally by SASSA to track your application through the approval process. You would have received this number at the time of application, either printed on a receipt, sent via SMS, or communicated verbally by the SASSA official who processed your application.
Your reference number is used for:
- Checking your application or grant status
- Making enquiries at SASSA offices or call centres
- Filing appeals against declined applications
- Updating your personal details on your grant account
- Resolving payment issues or disputes
Method 1: Check Your Old SMS Messages
The quickest way to find your reference number is to search through your old SMS messages. When you applied for your grant, SASSA sent a confirmation SMS that included your reference number. Search your messages for "SASSA" or "reference" to find this SMS. If you have changed your phone or deleted old messages, try the next method.
Method 2: Call the SASSA Toll-Free Number
Call the SASSA toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 during business hours (Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 16:00). When you get through to an agent, provide your full name and 13-digit ID number. The agent will look up your account and give you your reference number. Have a pen ready to write it down.

Method 3: Visit a SASSA Office
Visit any SASSA office with your original South African ID document. Tell the official at the reception desk that you need your reference number. They will look up your ID number on the system and provide your reference number. This usually takes just a few minutes.
SASSA offices are open Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 16:00. Arrive early to avoid long queues, especially at the beginning of the month when offices are busiest.
Method 4: Use the SASSA WhatsApp Service
Send a WhatsApp message to 082 046 8553with the word "Reference" or "Status". The automated system will ask for your ID number and provide information about your grant, which may include your reference number. This service is available 24 hours a day.
Method 5: Check the SRD Portal (SRD Grant Only)
If you receive the SRD R370 grant, visit srd.sassa.gov.za and log in using your ID number and registered cellphone number. Your application details, including the reference number, should be visible on your profile page. Note that this only works for SRD grant applications, not for other grant types.
Tips for Keeping Your Reference Number Safe
Write it down: Once you recover your reference number, write it down in a safe place - a notebook, not just your phone.
Take a photo:If you receive a printed receipt with your reference number, take a clear photo and save it to your phone's gallery.
Save the SMS: Do not delete the SMS from SASSA that contains your reference number. Mark it as important or star it in your messaging app.
Share with a trusted person: Give your reference number to a trusted family member or friend who can keep it safe for you.
