New in 2026: Same-Day Approval

SASSA has introduced a same-day approval system for Child Support Grant applications. When you visit a SASSA office with all the correct documents, your application can be processed and approved on the same day. This significantly reduces waiting times compared to the previous process, which could take up to 30 days.

Who Qualifies for the Child Support Grant?

The Child Support Grant is available to the primary caregiver of a child, not necessarily the biological parent. A primary caregiver is the person who is most responsible for the daily care of the child. This could be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or any other person who looks after the child. You must pass a means test to qualify.

How to Apply for the Child Support Grant

Unlike the SRD grant, the Child Support Grant must be applied for in person at a SASSA office. There is no cost to apply, and SASSA officials will assist you with the process. Here is what you need to do:

1

Gather Your Documents

Before visiting a SASSA office, make sure you have all required documents ready. This includes your South African ID, the child's birth certificate, proof of income (or a sworn statement if unemployed), and proof of residence.

2

Visit Your Nearest SASSA Office

Go to your nearest SASSA office during working hours (Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 16:00). You can find your nearest office on the SASSA website or by calling 0800 60 10 11. Arrive early as offices can get busy.

3

Complete the Application Form

A SASSA official will provide you with the application form and help you fill it in. They will also make copies of your documents. If you need a sworn affidavit (for example, if you don't have the father's details), a Commissioner of Oaths at the office can help you at no charge.

4

Undergo the Means Test

SASSA will assess your financial situation to ensure you qualify. They will look at your income, your spouse's income (if married), and whether you or the child receive any other grants or financial support.

5

Receive Your Reference Number

After submitting your application, you will receive a reference number. Keep this number safe - you will need it to check your application status and for any future enquiries.

6

Wait for Approval

With the 2026 same-day approval system, many applications are now approved immediately. If additional verification is needed, you will be notified via SMS. You can check your status at any SASSA office or by calling the toll-free number.

Required Documents

Bring the following documents to your SASSA office visit. Having all documents ready will speed up your application and may allow for same-day approval:

  • Your South African ID document (original and copy)
  • Child's birth certificate (original and copy)
  • Proof of income (payslip, bank statement, or sworn statement if unemployed)
  • Proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit from headman/chief)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Affidavit if the child's father/mother is unknown, deceased, or absent
  • Court order (if you are not the biological parent but are the legal guardian)
  • School attendance certificate for children of school-going age

About the Affidavit

If you do not have the father's or mother's details, you can make a sworn affidavit at the SASSA office free of charge. A Commissioner of Oaths is available at every SASSA office to help you with this. You do not need to go to a police station separately.
