SASSA Declined: Age Requirement Not Met

Your SRD R370 grant application was declined because SASSA determined that you fall outside the eligible age range of 18 to 59 years. This page explains what this means for you and what alternatives are available, depending on whether you are younger than 18 or older than 59.

Last updated:

What This Means

The SRD R370 grant has a strict age requirement: you must be between 18 and 59 years old. SASSA checks your date of birth against the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) National Population Register. If their records show you are outside this range, your application is automatically declined. This is not necessarily bad news - if you are 60 or older, you qualify for a grant that pays significantly more.

What to Do Next

Your next steps depend entirely on your actual age. Choose the situation that applies to you below.

If You Are 60 or Older (or Turning 60)

Good news - you qualify for a much larger grant

Turning 60 means you are now eligible for the Older Persons Grant (commonly called the old age pension). This grant pays significantly more than the SRD:

SRD R370 Grant

R370/month

Ages 18-59

Older Persons Grant

R2,180/month

Age 60-74 (R2,400 if 75+)

The Older Persons Grant is almost six times the SRD amount. Being declined for the SRD grant actually opens the door to a substantially better grant. Here is what you need to do:

  1. 1Visit your nearest SASSA office - The Older Persons Grant cannot be applied for online. You must visit a SASSA office in person.
  2. 2Bring your South African ID - You need your original green bar-coded ID book or smart ID card. A certified copy is not sufficient for the initial application.
  3. 3Bring proof of residence - A utility bill, affidavit, or letter from your ward councillor confirming where you live.
  4. 4Bring proof of banking details - If you want the grant paid into your bank account, bring a bank statement or bank letter not older than three months.

Important: Apply for the Older Persons Grant up to three months before you turn 60. This ensures there is no gap between your last SRD payment and your first Older Persons Grant payment. SASSA will start paying the Older Persons Grant from the month you turn 60.

If You Are Under 18

Your parent or caregiver may qualify for the Child Support Grant

The SRD R370 grant is only available to adults aged 18 and older. If you are under 18, you cannot apply for this grant yourself. However, your parent, legal guardian, or primary caregiver can apply for the Child Support Grant on your behalf.

About the Child Support Grant

  • Currently pays R530 per month per child
  • Available for children from birth until they turn 18
  • Applied for by the primary caregiver (the person who looks after the child day to day, not necessarily a biological parent)
  • The caregiver must earn less than R5,400 per month (single) or R10,800 per month combined (married)

To apply, the caregiver should visit their nearest SASSA office with the child's birth certificate, the caregiver's ID document, and proof of income (or a sworn statement of no income).

If Your Date of Birth Is Recorded Incorrectly

You can fix this and then appeal

In some cases, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has your date of birth recorded incorrectly. This means SASSA calculates your age based on wrong information. If you are actually between 18 and 59 but the DHA database says otherwise, here is what to do:

  1. 1Visit the Department of Home Affairs with your original birth certificate and any other supporting documents that prove your correct date of birth (school records, baptism certificate, hospital records).
  2. 2Apply for a correction to your identity document. The DHA will investigate and, if your claim is valid, update the National Population Register.
  3. 3Once your ID is corrected, submit an appeal on srd.sassa.gov.za and upload proof of the correction. Alternatively, reapply for the SRD grant with your updated information.

This process can take several weeks to months at Home Affairs. Be patient and keep all receipts and reference numbers from your DHA visit.

SRD Grant Age Rules at a Glance

Understanding the age boundaries is straightforward. SASSA uses your ID number to calculate your age, since the first six digits of a South African ID represent your date of birth (YYMMDD format).

Transitioning Between Grants

South Africa's social grant system is designed so that people can move between grants as their circumstances change. The most common transition is from the SRD R370 grant to the Older Persons Grant when you turn 60. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Apply early: Submit your Older Persons Grant application up to three months before you turn 60. SASSA processes applications within 30 to 90 days, so applying early prevents a payment gap.
  • You do not need to cancel the SRD first: SASSA automatically stops the SRD grant when you are no longer eligible. You can apply for the Older Persons Grant while still receiving the SRD.
  • Different means test: The Older Persons Grant has its own means test. A single person must earn less than R7,890 per month and have assets worth less than R1,372,800. These thresholds are much higher than the SRD income limit, so most SRD recipients will qualify easily.
  • Backdated payments: If your Older Persons Grant application is approved after your 60th birthday, SASSA will backdate the payments to the month you turned 60 (provided you applied in time).

Frequently Asked Questions

What age do you need to be for the SASSA SRD grant?
You must be between 18 and 59 years old to qualify for the SRD R370 grant. Your age is determined by the date of birth on your South African ID. If you turn 18, you become eligible from that month. If you turn 60, you lose eligibility for the SRD grant but become eligible for the Older Persons Grant.
I am turning 60 soon - should I worry about losing the SRD grant?
No, this is actually good news. When you turn 60, you qualify for the Older Persons Grant, which pays R2,180 per month (R2,400 if you are over 75). This is significantly more than the R370 SRD grant. Apply for the Older Persons Grant at your nearest SASSA office before your 60th birthday so there is no gap in payments.
Can someone under 18 get any SASSA grant?
A person under 18 cannot apply for the SRD grant themselves. However, their parent or primary caregiver can apply for the Child Support Grant (R530 per month per child) on their behalf. The caregiver must be the person who looks after the child on a daily basis. Apply at any SASSA office with the child's birth certificate and your ID.
My ID has the wrong date of birth - what should I do?
If your South African ID document shows an incorrect date of birth, you need to visit the Department of Home Affairs to apply for a correction. Bring supporting documents such as your birth certificate, school records, or an affidavit. Once your ID is corrected, you can reapply for the SRD grant or appeal your decline with the corrected ID as evidence.
Can I appeal an age-related SASSA decline?
If your age genuinely falls between 18 and 59 and SASSA incorrectly declined you for age reasons, you should appeal. This usually happens when your date of birth is recorded incorrectly at the Department of Home Affairs. Submit your appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za with a copy of your correct ID or birth certificate. If the decline is correct because you are outside the age range, an appeal will not help - instead, apply for the appropriate alternative grant.
What happens to my SRD grant when I turn 60?
Your SRD R370 grant will stop when you turn 60 because you no longer meet the age requirement. However, you should apply for the Older Persons Grant before your 60th birthday. SASSA recommends applying three months in advance to avoid any gap in payments. The Older Persons Grant pays R2,180 per month, which is almost six times the SRD amount.
